Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between CGST, SGST, and IGST?
CGST and SGST apply to intra-state transactions (seller and buyer in the same state) — each is half the GST rate. IGST applies to inter-state transactions (different states) and equals the full rate. This tool auto-detects which applies based on the states you select.
When should I use Bill of Supply instead of Tax Invoice?
Use Bill of Supply if you are a GST Composition Scheme dealer, or sell exempt/nil-rated goods or services (e.g. books, unprocessed food, healthcare). No GST is charged. For regular taxable supplies, use Tax Invoice.
I'm a freelancer billing an international client — what should I select?
Select a non-INR currency (USD, EUR, GBP, etc.) and set document type to Export Invoice. Exports are zero-rated under Section 16 of the IGST Act — GST is 0%. Your invoice will reflect the foreign currency amount with no tax charged.
What is Reverse Charge Mechanism (RCM)?
Under RCM, the buyer pays GST directly to the government. The seller still issues a tax invoice noting "Tax payable on Reverse Charge." Common cases: legal/advocate fees, goods transport agency (GTA), purchases from unregistered dealers, import of services.
Do I need an HSN or SAC code?
Mandatory if turnover exceeds ₹5 crore. Recommended for B2B invoices above ₹50,000. Optional for smaller businesses and B2C retail. HSN = goods, SAC = services. Common: 9983 (IT/software), 9985 (support services).
How does the UPI QR code work on the invoice?
Enter your UPI ID in the seller section. A QR code encoding your UPI ID and the exact invoice total will be printed at the bottom of the PDF. Your buyer can scan it with any UPI app (Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm) to pay instantly. Only available for INR invoices.
Is my invoice data stored on your servers?
No. Invoice data is processed in-memory only at the moment of PDF generation and is never stored, logged, or retained. Each download is a one-time operation.
What mandatory details must appear on a GST tax invoice?
Under Section 31 of the CGST Act read with Rule 46 of the CGST Rules: supplier's name, address, and GSTIN; a consecutive serial number; date of issue; recipient's name, address, and GSTIN (B2B); HSN/SAC code; description and quantity; taxable value; applicable GST rate; and amount of CGST, SGST/UTGST, or IGST. gstpdf.com generates all mandatory fields automatically.
Is a digitally generated GST invoice legally valid?
Yes. CBIC has clarified that electronically generated invoices are valid under GST provided they contain all mandatory fields under Rule 46 of the CGST Rules. A PDF invoice downloaded from gstpdf.com is legally valid and acceptable for GST filing and ITC claims.
What is the time limit for issuing a GST invoice?
For goods: at or before removal/delivery. For services: within 30 days of supply (45 days for banking and insurance). For export of services: before or after supply but before the GST return due date.
What is the difference between a Tax Invoice and a Proforma Invoice?
A Tax Invoice is a legal document that creates a tax liability and lets the buyer claim Input Tax Credit (ITC). A Proforma Invoice is a preliminary document sent before delivery — it does not create tax liability and cannot be used to claim ITC. Use Proforma for quotes or advance billing confirmation.
Do I need a GSTIN to issue a GST invoice?
GST registration (and therefore a GSTIN) is mandatory if annual turnover exceeds ₹40 lakh (goods) or ₹20 lakh (services). Below this threshold, registration is optional and you can issue a regular invoice without GST. If unregistered, use Bill of Supply instead of Tax Invoice.
